Jared's Top 5 SummerSlam Matches

Writer's picture: ATWBlog TeamATWBlog Team

Most of the following matches will probably mirror a lot of our followers/readers. I figured that, but still went with it because these matches all have a place in my memory, whether it was my childhood or later adulthood. Hopefully you all enjoy the following list.

Jared's Top 5 SummerSlam Matches

Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart - 1994

Whenever the conversation of SummerSlam comes up, one match comes to mind: Owen vs. Bret in a steel cage. I remember this being one of the first PPVs I actually got to watch from start to finish. The story that Owen and Bret told was a thing of beauty. These two didn’t even talk at family dinners to make it like they really disliked one another. In today’s world, that just doesn’t exist.

Hardy Boyz vs. The Dudley Boyz vs. Edge & Christian - 2000

One word to describe this match: carnage! This match from start to finish was just absolute carnage. From Jeff Hardy’s swanton to the empty tables below to Bubba Ray Dudley and Matt Hardy’s solo crashes to the outside of the ring to Lita taking a spear and smashing her head off the ladder. This match was just crazy from start to finish. These three teams laid it all on the line and we loved every minute of it.

The Undertaker vs. Edge - 2008

The first ever Hell In A Cell match at SummerSlam took place between two of my favorite wrestlers of all time. Undertaker had a slight advantage in the early stages, but Edge quickly turned the tables and took control. Edge started to use tables, ladders, and chairs (go figure) to his advantage. Edge’s spear through the table was a nice spot (funny, coming from someone who hates the spear). The two found their way back to the ring and continued the onslaught. Once back in the ring, there were some great spots as the match for close to the finish. When Edge went for the Old School, you knew full well that he was going through those tables. After the win and the Undertaker came back to the ring to finish off Edge, was just something you didn’t really see from him. The graphics at the end were a little strange but the spot was great where Edge went through the ring followed by the flames emerging from the hole. Great stuff.

Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena - 2014

Not one, not two, not three, but 16 German Suplexes! Now, I’m not a huge Lesnar fan, but I can still remember watching this match and just how one sided it really was. Lesnar made Cena is human lawn dart, tossing Cena from one side of the ring to the other. Cena had some small offensive opportunities, but in the end Lesnar destroyed Cena. This match felt more like a fight than a wrestling match and ultimately I think that’s why it sticks out in my mind. Even the little things stick out like when Lesnar mocked the Undertaker mid match by sitting up and starring through Cena. It was a typical Lesnar fight, but like I said it still sticks out in my memory.

The Undertaker vs. The Undertaker - 1994

I know a lot of people didn’t like this match, but 9 year old me absolutely loved it. I was a Undertaker junkie, so I just couldn’t believe there were two of them. Looking back on it now you realize just how into it all you were as a kid because as an adult it was so easy to tell the difference between the real and fake Undertaker. The match wasn’t great, but the storytelling is what I loved. That is why I have it ranked on my top 5 list.

Honorable Mention:

Daniel Bryan vs. John Cena - 2013

Davey Boy Smith vs. Bret Hart - 1992

Let me know what you think of my matches and why I picked them as my top 5. Also, make sure to check back as we get closer to SummerSlam to check out the rest of the blog team's picks. Everyone did there's just a little bit different.

Thanks for reading!
